The Characteristic of the Change for Ophthalmic Lens Coating applied by an Ultrasonic Cleaner

Abstract
Purpose: This paper was to observe the change for ophthalmic lens coatings applied by an ultrasonic cleaner.

Methods: The ophthalmic lens was fixed in the bath of the ultrasonic cleaner contained tap water and was applied by the ultrasonic energy operating the ultrasonic cleaner at 30 minutes intervals. The change for the lens coating was observed with operating time of the ultrasonic cleaner. The surface of the lens coating was observed using an optical microscope, the magnification of the eyepiece lens was 10¡¿, and the magnification of the objective was changed using a zoom lens from 1¡¿ to 4¡¿. Visible light transmittance was measured at 280 nm ~ 780 nm wavelength using the transmittance meter. The contact angle was measured by using the digital camera and the smart app and the change in thickness of the ITO thin film was observed by the high frequency RF induced electromotive force apparatus.

Results: No change for the lens coating was observed at 30 minutes running in the ultrasonic cleaner and the scratch portion of lens coating was appeared locally at one hour applying and expanded up to 2 hours applying the ultrasonic cleaner. The average visible transmittance was 97.85% without operating ultrasonic cleaner, and then decreased at 96.97% at 2 hours operation. The contact angle was slightly reduced at the first 30 minutes of the operation, but there was little change after that time. The change of ITO thickness was not observed with the operating time.

Conclusions: After one hour operating time of the ultrasonic cleaners it was found that the scratch portion was occurred locally and was expanded with time. Wide part of the spectacle lens may be inferred to affect the water-repellent coating film after operating 30 minutes of the ultrasonic cleaner.
